In the past 2 weeks The Playing It Forward Youth Sports Foundation has taken the opportunity to extend our breadth of offerings. Providing youth sports opportunities for local children is and always be our mission, but as we approached the end of 2011 our board unanimously agreed to intensify our efforts to make a difference in our community.
First, we solidified our commitment to the Town of Firestone and the Tri-Town areas by participating in the Adopt-A-Place program. We will be maintaining the section of Colorado Blvd between Sable Avenue and Pine Cone Avenue. Our first clean-up effort will be announced shortly. Additionally, we welcome YOUR help. This is a great way to be involved and give back to the community by volunteering just a couple hours of your time. Please contact us if you'd like to participate.
Our final (and most rewarding) year end initiative was brought to us by a couple of our thoughtful board members. As a result, we're pleased to announce that Playing It Forward was able to fulfill the Christmas wishes of 3 local children who otherwise may not have been able to experience the joy of the Holidays. In addition, King Soopers provided gift cards for us to present to the families.
Lastly, we are very passionate about ALL of the programs that we are involved in and look forward to increasing the number of opportunities available to our future stars! Without your support, this would not be possible. For that, we THANK YOU and are proud to have you as part of our family. We hope that your and your families have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Playing It Forward is proud to announce that we have joined the local community in Adopt-A-Place. Playing It Forward has adopted a section of Colorado Blvd between Sable and Pine Cone.
As you could imagine, roadside litter costs our communities, cities and state millions of dollars annually to control. It is often difficult to keep up with the trash that thoughtless people have dumped on our streets. This is why Playing It Forward is getting involved. This is yet another way for us to help provide for our community. We are committed to providing litter cleanup at a minimum of four times per year along this section. If you would like to participate in this initiative please look for our upcoming monthly new letters where we will publish our clean up schedule.
Welcome to the first installment of what will (hopefully) become a weekly feature on our site. You'll be able to get a glimpse into the minds and hearts of our board members. I have to admit, this is my first blog posting anywhere! However, there is no better time than now to give you a brief history of how we came to be and the profound effect that sports have played in my life.
Sports have played an immense role in my life from the moment I wrestled at age 4. As I grew older I played Football, Basketball, & Baseball. In 1991, my family moved from a small town in Southeastern Colorado to Brighton. Coming from a class size of 30 people Brighton felt like the big city to me. On top of starting High School in a new town with new people I struggled to find where I would fit in. Then came football season. I met my best friends in High School on that football field. They welcomed me with open arms and truly embodied the team atmosphere. That was really my ice breaker. I went on to play Basketball and Baseball as well.
I often look back at that as one of the most defining moments in my life. What if I didn't join the football team? My life could have gone a completely different direction. Because of the friendships that were built on the field and court my time was consumed with positive extracurricular activities and influences. I have the utmost respect appreciation for the coaches who helped mentor me and push me to be my best.
Now, as a father of 2 children who play youth sports, I see the parallels in their development. Unfortunately, there are too many children in our community who are not afforded that opportunity. That's why we started the Playing It Forward Youth Sports Foundation. It's our goal that all children be exposed to youth sports as a means of a positive outlet to allow them to experience the benefits that athletics provide. Not only will they stay physically active, they will meet new people and begin learning life lessons that will be applied for the rest of their lives.
Playing It Forward began our operations in July of 2011. During this short time period, we've been able to impact the lives of 5 local youth athletes. I hope that number grows exponentially each year! We've been overwhelmed by the support of businesses and families in our community; as well as our amazing staff of volunteers who have put in countless hours getting this off the ground. None of this would be possible without their support. Please take a moment to view our Partners page and patronize these wonderful companies.
I'll leave you with this. We have some very exciting news that we'll be able to share with you soon - so stay tuned. In the meantime, we ask that you help us spread the word. We want everyone in the community to know that there is help available. Thank you for sitting through our first posting. We encourage you to comment and interact with us.
